Recap of The Legionnaire

samanthatraunfeld

Welcome to another blog post! Here’s a quick recap of The Legionnaire to prep for the release of The Blood-Cursed coming October 15th! Please don’t read on if you haven’t read The Legionnaire, this blog post is going to be full of spoilers.

The opening of The Legionnaire introduces us to our three main character, Blood-Cursed Mercenary Saiden, Double agent Mozare and Queen Chosen Loralei. Through the book each character makes drastic decision that greatly affect each other, wrapping themselves in a very interconnected web of pain and trauma.

Saiden is struggling with breaking out of the expectations people have of her because of her curse. Every day she is fighting to be the best legionnaire she possibly can be to prove that what people think about her isn’t correct. When she is appointed to Queensguard, she thinks this is the perfect opportunity to prove herself to her kingdom and her adopted mother General Nakti.

Mozare is hiding a double life, living by day as a Legionnaire and aiding rebels who want to tear the kingdom down by night. Aided by shadow bending abilities, he sneaks away from his base and his partner to plot to take down the Queen and the ruling board of her advisors. To many this is a betrayal, but he thinks it’s just proof of his devotion to doing what is right.

Loralei is a young queen hiding a big secret, she should’ve been deposed as soon as her life-gifted powers started manifesting. Now she’s trying to adapt to her responsibilities as she prepares for her coronation, while also fending off rebels who want to see her dead. But those newfound responsibilities also give her access to new knowledge, things that set her on a dark descent.

In her new role as Queensguard, Saiden is growing closer to Loralei, but there’s another secret between them. Loralei has learned that the entire time Saiden thought her mother was dead she’s actually been a prisoner of the crown, held by her advisors so they could one day kill her to release Saiden’s Blood-Curse. Loralei grows very defensive of both Saiden and her mother, leading her to grow very suspicious of her board.

As coronation day approaches the rebels grow more desperate, attacks start taking place in very public places, and Mozare’s cover risks being blown. But despite the odds, the queen keeps managing to escape her imminent death (mostly because of Saiden’s quick thinking). All the rebels manage to do is radicalize the Queen against them.

At the Queen’s coronation celebration the rebels attack again with a different aim, attempting to kidnap the queen instead of outright killing her. But Saiden thwarts them again, disguising herself as her friend and charge, and being taken in Loralei’s place. In the rebel hideout, leader Revon tried to turn her to their side, but Saiden isn’t convinced he’s right. Still she pledges to help, all the while trying to learn how to get them to see that killing Loralei isn’t the answer.

As the Queen falls deeper into a dark mindset, she starts realizing that she has a hard time trusting anyone around her. She’s quick to kill, including some robbers in the street and her entire board of advisors, who she sends for execution after learning that they plotted to harm Saiden and her mother.

Saiden’s devotion to protecting Loralei is broken however, when she almost kills Mozare in an attempt to protect Saiden one night, and she fully turns to the rebels in an attempt to save Loralei from her own darkness.

The book ends with the rebels attacking the palace, leading to the deaths of Loralei, her lover Cara and General Nakti. At the same time Saiden is reunited with her mother and determined to no longer be someone others can control.
